brew

If you're in Leeds, keep your eyes peeled for a copy of Brew - a new little magazine for the city from the guys at Culture Vulture.

I've done a quick illustration for the first issue, to accompany a piece by my good mate Rose.

modern type

My friend Matt Jones emailed, telling me about his plans to hold the first retrospective of Ronald Searle's work on the west coast of America - at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco.

The only snag was how to get Searle's work to California. So Matt hit on the idea of asking his friends and contacts in the industry to donate a Searle-inspired piece, which he could auction to cover shipping costs. Loads of people said yes, and you can see the results over at Matt's blog.

And here's mine - a British rocker, inspired by Searle's late fifties work (in books like the wonderful 'Modern Types').

six bad poets

Earlier in the year, Faber and Faber got in touch and asked if I'd like to draw the characters from Christopher Reid's new book 'Six Bad Poets', to use on the cover.

It was a fun job (not least because the long-form poem is great). I wrote down how I saw things first, and then sent in some roughs - working with the designers and Christopher to make sure I was heading along the right lines. It was a remarkably painless process - made so easy because Christopher's writing was so exact.

Here are a few of the final illustrations, along with the final cover - put together by Eleanor at Faber. The book comes out on September 5th, but you can preorder it here.

'Derek Dufton'.

'Bryony Butters'.

'Jonathan Wilderness'.

The book itself, which you can buy here.

world toilet day

Shockingly, one in three women worldwide face incredible risks (such as rape, or disease) simply because they don't have access to a proper working toilet.

To support the work that Water Aid are doing on the issue, I drew this short comic strip. It accompanies the film they made for  'World Toilet Day' last November.
You can find a copy of my strip in the latest issue of Oasis - Water Aid's supporter magazine.

Remember how, ages ago, I met Gilbert Shelton at his studio in Paris? Well. I finally wrote it up for The Comics Journal.
