kersplat!

Kersplat! comic was my entry in a school competition when I was, I think, 11. It won first prize, which they hadn't really put much thought into; Mr Lewis, the art teacher, handed me a fiver.

The eagle-eyed among you may notice Jeremy Beadle, who died today, turning up in 'I Spy' as Jeremy Treacle. RIP.

It's a mad mad mad mad world...

Sigh. I could watch Saul Bass' titles from 'It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World' over and over, and over....

Thanks to my brother for sending me a link to Swiss photographer Eric Jacquier's site, and especially to his photos of Burley, Leeds, taken in the late 1960s.

hello there, 2008

Happy new year all.

One thing the festive period brought with it was my new niece, Hannah. She was born on Christmas Eve and here's a picture of the wee bairn, looking thrilled to bits that she's going to be lumbered with one present a year from now on in:

Family aside: It's been nice to start 2008 with some fun work:

I've just finished a 7" single cover for a British indie band called
i concur (I'll post some pics once I've got the okay from them but, you know, they seem to like it) and I'm also starting work on a new book about rock music for Time Out.

I've got ten full-page drawings to do for the book, each illustrating an essay by an established rock-critic (among them
Peter Shapiro and Gary Mulholland). One of the pieces mentioned Neil Young and reading it led me back to this book, which I can't recommend highly enough:
